Passage Events — Log GPS Positions, Course Changes, and Sightings While Sailing

Capture course changes, squalls, sail changes, and sightings as discrete GPS-tagged events while you're on passage — with a single tap from your iPhone or iPad.

Some moments during a passage are worth remembering with more than just a paragraph at the end of the day.

That tack off Texel when the wind shifted. The squall that hit at 0300. The dolphins that showed up somewhere south of Brest. You know roughly when and where it happened — but by the time you sit down to write your log entry, the details have blurred.

Passage Events fix that. One tap from the entry list, and SailorsLog captures your exact GPS position, timestamp, and a short note. The whole thing takes about five seconds — quick enough to do while you’re still at the helm.

Log GPS-Tagged Sailing Events with One Tap

Tap Log Event in the toolbar. SailorsLog grabs a GPS fix, shows you the position in nautical notation, and lets you add a note — “Course change to 270°”, “Reefed main”, “Wind shift NW”. Pick which logbook entry to attach it to (the picker shows your five most recent entries), and hit Log.

Events appear as brass-coloured dots on your entry’s map and as compact chips below the log text — tap any chip to edit the note or delete the event.

Log Events Below Deck Without GPS

We know GPS doesn’t always cooperate on a sailboat. If you’re below deck and there’s no clear sky view, SailorsLog lets you log without a position — your note and the device timestamp are captured, and you can always add position details (from a chartplotter readout, for example) in the note text.

Discrete Sailing Events vs. Continuous GPS Tracking

Passage Events aren’t continuous tracking — apps like Navionics and Orca already do that well. This is about discrete moments: quick, intentional, low-friction. A note that anchors a memory to a place and time, captured in the flow of sailing rather than hours later from memory.

Your events sync across devices via iCloud, just like everything else in SailorsLog. You can also export your full logbook as a PDF — passage events appear as markers on the printed map.

Download SailorsLog on the App Store and start logging your passages.
